Lydia S. Doner Charlton v Calvin H. Charlton (Journal 6 p557/560 - 29 May 1866; Roll 17 case number 155)

The couple was married on 25 Nov 1858, Wms Co by EJ Evans (Marriage V3 p34). Calvin H., born in 1834 in Crawford Co, OH, was the son of John and Elizabeth Hoops Charlton, who married in Lisbon, OH c1825. Lydia, born on 28 Feb 1837 in PA, was the daughter of Christian and Mary Doner. They had a son, Clarence O, b 19 May 1862. The couple was listed in the 1860 St. Joseph Twp federal census p119a-b, as Calvin 25 OH and Lydia 23 OH. By the 1870 Center Twp federal census p15, Lydia and son were enumerated with her father as Christian Doner 67 PA, Lydia Charlton 33 PA, and Clarence Charlton 8 PA. Note the change of birthplace from the previous census.
Lydia told the court as of 25 Aug 1866 she resided with her father, Christian Donner, in Center Twp. Calvin was a habitual drunk and had abandoned her and their son. The court granted the divorce. Her father Christian died on 13 Nov 1872 @69Y 8M 10D and was buried beside his wife in Brown Cemetery. On 1 June 1874 Lydia married M. Deloss Gay in Wms Co (Marriage V4 p336); Deloss, son of Nathan and Nancy Millican Gay, was born in 1826 NY and had married a Margarette J. Deloss died in Franklin, Fulton Co, OH on 20 Aug 1886. Together Deloss and Lydia had a son, John A, born in 1876. From the 1900 Elkhart, Elkart Co, IN federal census p22 one finds Lydia D. Gay 63 widow with her nephew Oliver Reevs and his family; Lydia is listed as having 4 children with 2 surviving. Lydia died on 15 Apr 1907 in Goshen, Elkhart Co, IN and was buried beside her parents as Lydia Doner Gay.
On 24 July 1875 in Barry Co, MI Calvin H married Flora A Hunter. According to the 1880 Kalamazoo, Eaton Co, MI federal census, p249B, Calvin H. Charlton was listed as Calvin 46 OH, wife Flora 19 MI, son Oscar 4 MI, and daughter Nellie 1 MI. Calvin died in Ionia, MI, in 1904. In the 1880 Clayton, Lenawee Co, MI federal census, Clarence Charlton, a telephone operator, single, resided with the Benjamin Sales household.
