Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Cass, 1881


Elmina Green Cass v James B. Cass (Journal 11 p168 - 14 June 1881; p291 - 24 Dec 1881; Roll 36)

The couple was married on 30 Jul 1877, Amboy Twp, Hillsdale Co, MI.  He was 49 living in Woodbridge, Hillsdale Co, MI and a native of Muskingum Co, OH; she was 59, a resident of Williams Co, OH and a native of Pennsylvania. James Bernard Cass, a Civil War veteran, was born in Dresden, Muskingum Co, OH on 18 July 1828. He was the son of Bernard and Rebecca Cass.  James was enumerated with his parents in the 1850 and 1860 Waynesfield, Lucas Co, OH Federal Census and may have married a Elizabeth Hubbell in Jan 1852 there. 

 

Elmira Green, the wife of Horace Green, also a Civil War veteran, was born in 1819 PA and enumerated with husband Horace Green in the 1850 and 1860 Madison Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census.  By 1870 Almina is 49 PA farmer living alone in Madison Twp and in 1880 Elmina is 59 OH widow again in Madison Twp, Williams Co, OH, according to Federal Census records for that township; Almina/Elmina can not read or write.     

 

James had been absent for three or more years.  The court told Elmina that her suit was not properly filed and it was dismissed.  She refiled and received her divorce.  From The Bryan Press, 8 Dec 1881 p5 c3, the court granted a divorce decree to Elmina. According to Roll 36 case number 847 - Dec 1880 of the Williams County, Ohio Civil and Criminal Court records, Elmina sued William Stambaugh, administrator of the will of Elizabeth Shinabarger, deceased, who owed Elmina some money.  Elizabeth was a neighbor of Elmina/Almina Green.

 

Mrs. Almina Green married Abraham Ritchey in Williams Co, OH on 30 August 1885.  Abraham had been married to Lucy Robinson, in Williams Co, OH on 1 January 1849.  He was married again to Lydia Elizabeth Taylor in Wauseon, Fulton Co, OH c1862, but divorced from her on the grounds of desertion on 17 March 1885 in Marshall, Calhoun Co, MI.  Almina filed for a divorce from him in Charlotte, Eaton Co, MI on 8 March 1895.  A few days later on 25 March 1895 in Steuben Co, IN Abraham married Rachel Lidge Shontz.  He died on 13 February 1904.  Almina’s whereabouts are unknown after 1895.

 

James Cass married an Elizabeth c1883 and was enumerated with her in the 1900 Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census.  He died in 1904 and was buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Montpelier, OH.  His last wife Elizabeth had died in July 1902.
