Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Brown (Andrew), 1876-1877


 

Andrew Brown v Julia Ann (Cain) Coon Brown (Journal 9 p180 - June 1877; Roll 30 case number 23 - Apr 1876)

The couple was married on 15 Mar 1867, Hillsdale Co, MI (V3 p26).  According to the 1870 NW Twp, Wms Co, OH federal census, p3, the couple was listed as Andrew 53 PA, Julian 38 OH, Samuel 13 OH, Ezra 9 OH, and Mary E 7 OH.  It would appear that the three children were issue of a previous marriage of the wife.  Andrew charged that Julia was the wife of a living spouse, Alexander Hamilton.  The court granted this divorce, but before the divorce was issued, Andrew took out a marriage license on 4 Feb 1876, Wms Co (Marriage V4 p447) to wed Mrs. Henrietta Shinn.  The license was not returned.  This Henrietta Shinn was formerly married to Aaron Shinn in Wms Co (Marriages V3 p98) on 4 May 1860; her maiden name was Henrietta C. Speaker. Andrew and Henrietta did get married in Hillsdale Co, MI on 14 May 1876.

 

Andrew, born 1827 prob Somerset Co, PA, was enumerated in the 1880 NW Twp, Williams Co, OH as Andrew 58 PA with new wife, Henrietta, 43 OH, and stepsons William H 13 and George 5.  He died according to his obit in The Bryan Press (Bryan, OH), 6 October 1887 p3 c5 under news of NW Twp - Andrew Brown died in the Williams Co, OH Infirmary in late Sept 1887.

 

July Ann Cain, born 7 January 1832 in OH, was the daughter of Samuel Cain and Esther Elizabeth Mocherman Cain.  She was listed with her parents in the 1850 Florence Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census as Julia Cain 18 OH.  She married John Coon in Williams County, OH on 8 April 1856.  John 44 OH and Julia 28 OH with children William 18, Harmon 16, and Samuel 3, were enumerated in the 1860 NW Twp Federal Census.  John was married before to Matilda on roe, who was the mother of the two older sons.  John died on 26 May 1861 at the age of 46Y 14D and was buried in the Palmer Cemetery in Camden, Hillsdale Co, MI.

 

Whether Julia married Alexander Hamilton is not currently known, but she did have a daughter Mary Ellen Hamilton, born 25 December 1862 in Williams Co, OH.  Mary Ellen would marry Albert Walker and die on 18 October 1949; she was buried in Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer, OH.  

 

In both the 1880 and 1900 NW Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census records, Julia A Coon was 48 OH divorced and 68 OH widowed, respectively. Mother Julia Ann Cain Coon Brown died on 21 October 1904 and was buried in the Eagle Creek Cemetery near her mother.
