The WCGS meeting on September 13, 2010 was held in the Harman Room of the Williams County Public Library Annex for Local History and Genealogy in Bryan, OH. Our meetings usually begin at 6:30 PM and this was no exception. We began the meeting with an overview of what's coming up this season.
Our guest speaker, Fred Strobel, discussed helpful tips on publishing a book. He suggested using a Word software program and outlined the various things to consider as one creates the book - font, size, margins, pictures, format, etc. He gave suggestions on how to cut costs as well as the editing/drafting process of taking one's work and actually publishing it. Covers were mentioned as well - hardbound, softbound, wire/spiral-bound to name a few. Fred brought several samples of his own work and explained the need to select a reliable, user-friendly publisher. This type of project does not have to break the bank, especially if one has other family members who will underwrite the costs. The bottom line is this - no matter what format one uses, a researcher/author should carefully site one's sources, be mindful of copyright infringement, and edit well before proceeding.
At the conclusion of Fred's presentation he shared a handout for further study and entertained questions from the gathering. Lastly, each attendee introduced himself/herself and what areas or surnames each had an interest in. This first meeting of the season was very well-attended.
