Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Henry (Jacob)

Jacob Henry, Jr., v Christina Brookhouse Henry (Journal 7 - June 1868; Newspaper Notice, June 1868) see Samuel Henry

By Pamela Pattison Lash (updated 2010)

The couple was married on 13 Nov 1859 in Richland Co, OH. Jacob, born 3 Aug 1818 in New Rumley, Harrison Co, OH, was the son of Jacob and Susannah Gotshall Henry. Christina, parentage unknown, was born in PA c1839. The couple was enumerated in the 1860 Superior Twp, PO Montpelier p197, as Jacob Henry 41 OH weaver, Christena 21 PA, and Edward Brookhouse 14 PA.  On 11 Dec 1863 Christina gave birth to a son, Edward Arthur Henry, in Superior Twp.  In 1868 Jacob claimed that Christina, then a resident of Union Co, IL, had committed adultery with neighbor Allen Tingley, a resident of Superior Twp, Wms Co, OH.  The Bryan Democrat, 18 June 1868, showed a notice of divorce for Jacob and Christina; he filed for this action on 4 May 1868.

The 1870 Superior Twp federal census, p2, listed Jacob Henry as 51 OH, a weaver. In 1880 Superior Twp federal census, p28, Jacob was 61 OH, along with wife Sara 49 NY, and stepdaughter Effa L. Hicker 13 IN.  He had married Sarah on 1 Jan 1874; she was the widow of Jacob Hicker.  Interestingly, in the 1880 Madison Twp, Williams Co, OH federal census p464, son Edward Henry lived with the Allen Tingley family.  His mother was not living there, but Allen Tingley was married to a Rebecca and had several children.  It is possible that this Edward Henry was really the son of Allen Tingley, but this is speculation at this time.

Sarah, b. 19 Oct 1820 in NY, died on 28 Dec 1906 in Florence Twp, Wms Co and was buried in the Leggett Cemetery. Note the discrepancy of the cemetery date and the 1900 federal census info.  Her husband Jacob Henry died earlier on 18 Oct 1906.
