Mary charged her husband with gross neglect. They did not show up in court. The case was dismissed. In the Fountain City Argus, 23 Jan 1879: Alexander Smith who resides in Crawford, Isabella Co, MI, must take notice that Mary E. Smith, on 24 Jan 1879 did file her petition charging gross neglect of duty and fraudulent contract of marriage and seeks a divorce. Meeting in court on 24 Feb 1879 with no outcome. Note this action was not found in the court roll, only in the journal.
