WCGS Meeting - November 2010 and Upcoming Sale

My friend, Pat, sent an update on WCGS November meeting, info on the Society's sale, and the December 2010 meeting. Here's what she has to report:

By Pat Goebel

The Williams County Genealogical Society met Monday, November 8, 2010 in the Harmon Room of the West Annex to the Williams County Public Library.  The guest speakers were Genevieve and Savannah Eicher who enlightened us about the Underground Railroad.  Using the old Indian Trails, fugitives from slavery crossed through Williams County, whether led by a guide ( known as a conductor) or following the North Star, people headed east to Lake Erie, north to Michigan or even northwest to Illinois and then on to Wisconsin.  Genevieve shared the history of the Underground Railroad in Northwest Ohio based on the stories passed down through her family and verified by her lifelong work as a historian.

Assisted by her daughter, Savannah Lee Eicher, history was brought to life with stories of places like Pulaski, Stryker, Bryan, the Quaker Meetinghouse, and points in between.

Genevieve is the researcher for the northwest region Ohio of The Friends of Freedom Society-The Underground Railroad Association.  The organization is a grassroots, all volunteer non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to research, identify, document and preserve Underground Railroad sites throughout Ohio.  The book Freedom Seekers was published by this organization, which Genevieve contributed information from our area. You may contact Genevieve at her email address: ohindian@yahoo.com

The next meeting will be December 13, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the West Annex to the Williams County Public Library. It’s our Annual Christmas Party.  Bring a finger food item to share as well as quick tips or experiences you have had researching for your ancestors. A good time will be shared by all.

Reminder: WCGS is having a 20% off sale-during the span of December 1-24-all of our publications will be on sale.  The purchase must be requested/mailed in/received only during that timeframe to receive the discount.  This would be a super way to get something for yourself or others as a seasonal gift. (Check out the publications on our website - www.wcgs-ogs.com

The purpose of WCGS is the preservation of county records and family research.  Monthly meetings are held on the second Monday of each month, excluding July and August, in the conference room of the West Annex of the Bryan Public Library. The public is invited for all the meetings.
