Civil War Veteran’s Guardian Was Murdered by a Jealous Brother-in-Law - Edwin A Langley, Springfield Twp

This Civil War Soldier left his native residence of Keene, Coshocton Co, OH after his service in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry was over, taking his wife and small children to Springfield Twp, Williams Co, OH.  A blacksmith by trade he established a home here and later moved to Gorham Twp, Fulton Co, OH after the death of his wife.

 

Edwin Apuilla LANGLEY, the son of Moses B Langley and Martha B Childs, was born on 17 March 1843 in Keene, Coshocton Co, OH.  He is found in both the 1850 and 1860 Keene, Coshocton Co, OH Federal Census Records, living with his parents and later his widowed mother.  Moses B Langley was born in NH c1802 and died by 30 June 1859.  Dr. Lucius Howard was appointed by the local court as guardian for Moses’ minor heirs, Jonas C, Lila P, and Edwin A Langley.  Representing them and the interests of widow Martha Langley, Lucius petitioned the court to sell Moses’ lands of Lot 18 consisting of about 160 acres.  Three men were set to appraise the value of this property and Howard was then allowed to sell the property with the proviso of 1/3 payment in hand, 1/3 in one year, and the balance in two years with 6% interest.  Edwin and Lila appear to be twins of age 16 and Jonas was 20 years of age.  Older sister Mary Jane had married Simon Elliott on 13 Apr 1854 in Coshocton and lived in Richland Twp, Defiance Co, OH.  The youngest child, Rebecca Langley was born c1848 but she must have died before the father as she is not included in this probate.

 

On 28 January 1860 Dr. Lucius Howard, husband of the former Rosette Farwell, was murdered by his brother-in-law in the Farwell Butcher Shop.  Lewis Farwell believed that Lucius was overly friendly with Farwell’s wife and had words with the physician earlier in the evening.  Farwell then left home to conduct some business and Howard decided to stroll over to the butcher shop.  Farwell changed his mind and returned home to find Howard there and killed him with a piece of stove wood.  The butcher was convicted of second degree murder and spent a term at the Ohio Penitentiary.  He later moved to Illinois with his family.

 

By the 1860 Richland, Defiance Co, OH Federal Census records, Edwin’s sister Mary and husband Simon Elliott, and Langley brother Jonas were listed there. Edwin Langley joined the Co G unit of the 104^th OVI and later was transferred to the Co H unit of the 80^th OVI.  He mustered in on 29 Feb 1864 in Ohio and mustered out on 13 Aug 1865 at Little Rock Arkansas as a private.  He married Clarissa Leavitt in Coshocton Co, OH on 19 Oct 1865.  

 

Clarissa, born in Keene, OH on 13 Nov 1842, was the daughter of Gideon Leavitt and wife Mary Sickles.  Edwin, Clarissa, and children were found in the 1870 Springfield Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census; they were also enumerated there in 1880 and he was listed in the 1890 Veterans Schedule for the Stryker, OH area.  He applied for a CW Pension as an invalid on 23 Aug 1890. Clarissa died in Williams Co, OH on 24 Sept 1894 and was buried in the Boynton Cemetery of Springfield Twp.  Edwin and Clarissa were the parents of the following four children:

2.     Zina E (1869 OH – 6 Dec 1951, Alvordton, Williams Co, OH)

3.     Milo Edwin (1871 Stryker, OH – Jan 1957, Williams Co, OH; m1 Eva Austin, 15 Oct 1893, Williams Co, OH; m2 Alta M Replogle)

4.     Edna Mary (14 Aug 1880, Williams Co, OH – pos 22 Jan 1948, Lucas Co, OH; m Robert Lee Johnson, 25 Mar 1913, Lucas Co, OH )

 

By 1900 Edwin was living in Gorham Twp, Fulton Co, OH as a landlord but ten years later he was residing in Brady Twp, Williams Co, OH as a widower living on his own income.  Edwin died on 28 Jan 1919 in West Unity, OH of heart disease and was buried beside Clarissa in Boynton Cemetery.

Our first Civil War veteran and resident of Montpelier, Williams County, Ohio descended from a Revolutionary War soldier.  He was one of three sons who served in the Union Army and took great pride in his Infantry service of 1 Year 4 Months and 26 Days.  The soldier entered the war as a private in Company K of the 38^th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, mustering in on 16 February 1864 in Ohio and mustering out on the most common day for this unit, 12 July 1865 in Louisville, Tennessee.  He later applied for a CW pension as an invalid on 3 July 1876, suffering from injuries to his right shoulder, and upon his death due to paralysis of the heart, his widow was granted his pension on 14 June 1915.

 

William Whitfield LAMBERSON, the fourth child of nine and the third son of Edward S. Lamberson and wife Charity Ely, was born on 24 June 1843, probably in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.  Through his maternal lineage he traced back to his Revolutionary War veteran great-grandfather, Colonel George Ely of Hunterdon Co, NJ, DAR #A038190.  This lineage is also applicable for both Asher and James Lamberson.

 

William’s family can be found in the federal census records of 1840 Rush Twp, Northumberland Co, PA,   1850 Roaring Creek, Montour Co, PA, and 1860 Cardington, Morrow Co, OH. His father, Edward S Lamberson, was born on 9 July 1818 in Northumberland Co, PA.  He was the son of Edward Lamberson and Mary Ann Quick; both were buried in the Presbyterian Chapel Cemetery at Rushtown, PA.  Edward S married Charity Ely in Northumberland Co, PA  on 1 September 1836. Charity, the daughter of Caleb Ely and Jeanette Campbell, was born on 29 February 1820 in Northumberland Co, PA. Together they had the following children:

Father Edward S Lamberson died on 19 Dec 1884 in Fayette, Fulton Co, OH and was buried there in the Pleasant View Union Cemetery.  Mother Charity Ely Lamberson passed away on 25 Apr 1886, also in Fayette, and was buried beside husband Edward.

 

William married Margaret Adelina Coleman on 3 December 1865 in Williams County, Ohio.  Margaret, the daughter of William Coleman and Maria Lutz/Lutes, was born in Blissfield, Coshocton Co, OH on 27 May 1851.  They are found in the following federal census records: 1870 Cardington, Morrow Co, OH, 1880 NW Twp, Williams Co, OH, 1890 Veterans Schedule for Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH, and the 1900 and 1910 Montpelier, Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH, where his occupation was driving a grocery wagon.  The couple had five children, 3 sons and 2 daughters.  The children are: 

(1) Lillian (16 Apr 1866, Coshocton Co, OH – 17 Apr 1866, Coshocton Co, OH), 

(2) Abraham Ellsworth (13 Feb 1868 Coshocton Co, OH – 8 July 1939, Toledo, Lucas Co, OH, m Nellie Tressler, 20 Sept 1892, Williams Co, OH), hardware merchant,

(3) George Johnson (18 Nov 1870, Morrow Co, OH – 23 June 1953 near Archbold, Fulton Co, OH, m1 Gertie J Kernys, 9 Mar 1893, Hillsdale Co, MI; m2 Elizabeth “Libbie” Huffman, 19 Nov 1899, Williams Co, OH), farmer and custodian of Park and Lincoln Schools in Bryan,

(4) Bertha Charity (3 Nov 1873 Coshocton Co, OH – 15 Oct 1940 Ann Arbor, Washtenaw Co, MI, m1 Fred Chapman, 1891; m2 John S Smith, 1895; m3 Eli Stockwell, 1910),  

(5) Harley Winfred (18 Oct 1883, Montpelier, Williams Co, OH – 17 June 1936 Toledo, Lucas Co, OH, m Mary Pacholski).

 

William died on 9 June 1915 in Montpelier and was buried in the Riverside Cemetery there.  Margaret used the services of lawyer EE Bechtol to file for his Civil War Pension as his widow for the cost of  $10.  Margaret continued to live in Montpelier until her death on 20 September 1900.  She too was buried in Riverside Cemetery.

 

Oldest brother Asher Ely Lamberson served in Co I of the 3^rd Ohio Infantry  as a private, mustering in May 1861. He was soon discharged due to lung trouble.  By the Civil War Draft Records for Clinton Twp, Fulton Co, OH Asher in 1863 was unmarried with a notation that he had consumption and had been twice refused to be in military service.  Asher is found in the 1890 Veteran’s Schedule as a resident of Gorham Twp, Fulton Co, OH with a muster in date of March 1861 but without a muster out date.  Asher and his wife Margaret Ely were parents of a son, Franklin Spencer, born 28 Oct 1880 in Fulton Co, OH; he married Celeste Crawford, 13 Apr 1903 in Fulton Co, OH.   Margaret was the daughter of William Ely and Sarah Jane Campbell.  She was born in Oh on 27 Oct 1844 and died in Fayette, Fulton Co, OH on 30 Nov 1911.  After his wife’s death Asher moved to Leoni, Jackson Co, MI, and lived with his son Frank until his death due to arteriosclerosis. He was listed as a retired barber on his Michigan death certificate.

 

Younger brother James Wesley Lamberson was also a CW veteran, serving in Co A 142^nd Indiana Infantry as a corporal from 20 Sept 1864 to 28 June 1865 when he mustered out at Kendallville, IN. He served 9 Months and 25 Days. He married Rebecca A Mehrling, the daughter of John Mehrling and Lydia Reber. Rebecca was born in Huron Co, OH on 1 July 1848 and died on 12 September 1924 in Montpelier. James and Rebecca were the parents of the following four children:

2. Ada Rose (6 Dec 1871, Morrow Co, OH – 18 June 1946; m William F Carl),

4. George Alfred (31 Jan 1876, Williams Co, OH – 12 Aug 1952, Williams Co, OH; m Sylvia Bible, 24 Dec 1899, Williams Co, OH),

James applied for a Civil War pension as an invalid on 10 Apr 1871; his widow Rebecca was granted his pension on 11 Feb 1924.

Civil War Veteran Becomes Despondent – Suicide in Alvordton, 1899

This Civil War Veteran unexpectedly ended his life, but there were telltale signs that all was not well with him.  Here’s what one can discern using this old newspaper account:

Bryan Democrat (Bryan, OH), Thursday, 26 January 1899, p5 c3

John Taylor, a resident of Alvordton, committed suicide Tuesday by hanging himself in the stable on his premises.  He had been dead for two or three hours when discovered.  No cause is assigned for the act, as he was a retired farmer in easy circumstances and his domestic relations were harmonious.  It had been noticed for some time by those intimate with him that he had lost his mental balance and was at times quite despondent.  His family consisted of his wife and an unmarried daughter; two other daughters are married.  The circumstances attending the sad affair rendered the holding of an inquest unnecessary.  The deceased was about fifty years of age.

John Taylor (1844 Fulton Co, OH – 24 January 1899, Alvordton, Wms Co, OH) was buried in Floral Grove Cemetery, Pioneer, Madison Twp, Wms Co, OH.  He was the son of Ezra Taylor and Hannah Dibble.  He married Lovina Catherine May on 1 May 1870 in Wms Co, OH. John was a Civil War vet, having served in Co H 9^th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry.  He filed for a CW pension as an invalid on 31 July 1887 and his widow filed for one on 23 June 1899.

Lovina Catherine May (1852 Wayne Co, OH – 26 November 1922, Wms Co, OH) was buried beside her first husband, John Taylor.  She was the daughter of Jonas May and Elizabeth Hart.  Lovina married a second time to Edward G Frisbie on 4 October 1911, Wms Co, OH.

John and Lovina had three children – Ezra Delain, Mary Elizabeth, and Ora Mae.

"But I'm Not Dead" - Curtis S. Garrison, CW Vet

I’m sure you have heard of obituaries being written for a person who is very much alive.  If not, here’s the case of a man living in Williams County, Ohio who was given a nice obit; when he saw this, he was quick to correct the false impression of his demise – wouldn’t you?

This is what I first uncovered:

Death of Curt Garrison

Report reaches here Tuesday of the death of Curtis S Garrison of Russian influenza at Edon.  Mr Garrison was born in Portage Co, O in 1835; was left an orphan at an early age; when eleven years old he began work on a canal; six years later he became a peddler; came to Williams Co and was engaged as a clerk in a store at Edgerton until 1869, excepting three months in 1861 which he served in the 14^th Ohio under Col Jim Steadman – About 1870 he located at Edon, this county and soon won prominence as one of the most active businessmen in the western part of the county.  He was a genial gentleman and many warm friends will regret his early death.

He was the first child born in Florence Twp, Williams Co, OH and went on to become a husband and father.  He answered the Union call and served in the Civil War, but came back to his Williams Co, OH roots until about 1882 when he moved his family to Kansas.  Elk Falls, KS became his new home and where he planted a second set of roots until his death in 1921.  If you are a direct descendant of this David Singer, you would qualify for the Williams County Genealogical Society's First Families honor.  Of course, you have to become a member, fill out the application form, and provide the applicable documentation.  The deadline for the 2014 initiation is April 15.  For more information, check the WCGS website HERE

David Singer was born in Edon, Ohio on April 11, 1839 and passed out of this life at Elk Falls, Kansas, November 20, 1921, aged 82 years, 7 months and 9 days.  He enlisted in Company "C" 38th Ohio VI and served until the close of the Civil War. He was married to Harriet Kentner in Ohio.  To this union were born 5 sons and 3 daughters.  One daughter died in childhood, and another at age 22 and one son at the age of 27. Two sons now live in Nebraska, one in Oklahoma, one in California.  Two sons were with him when he died.  His daughter lives in Nebraska, but was sick and unable to be a here.

Mr. Singer and his family came to Elk County in 1882, locating in Union City Township.  Four years later, they came to Elk Falls residing on a farm until after death of Mrs. Singer, which occurred about 19 years ago, in Ohio.  Since that time, he has made his home in Elk Falls, Kansas, engaging in various enterprises, being thus engaged at the time of his death.  He was an upright citizen, quite and thoughtful for the welfare of others, generous, faithful to every trust committed to him.

He professed faith in Christ in his early life and united with the Christian Church.  He was not identified with the church here.  He became a Mason in Edon Lodge # 464 in Edon, Ohio and in 1895; he transferred his membership to Meridian Lodge #126, A.F. A.M. in Elk Falls.  He was a faithful member and served in Tyler for 14 years.  He was a loyal member of Rawlins Post #26 G.A.R.   The funeral took place at the Christian Church, November 22, at 2 pm conducted by Newton Hill.  Music arranged by, Mrs. W.H. Walker.  There were beautiful floral tributes.  The Masons and Eastern Star Chapter, also, a few of the Veterans of the Civil War, and a large number of friends were in attendance.

    

The impressive ceremony of the Masonic Order was given at the grave.  Another mound marks the last resting place of the form of our friend and brother.  Year after year loving friends will place a flag and a cluster of flowers there as a silent tribute of respect.  The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved ones.   N.H.

DAVID SINGER was the first white child born in Florence Township. His parents were among the first white settlers here, coming in 1837. His father was a farmer, and he and wife, Margaret (Kragore) Singer, were parents of eight children. They entered one-half section of government land here and still own 220 acres. David was born in 1839, April 11, and his educational advantages were necessarily limited, as at that early day the time of the pioneers was employed in a struggle with the forces of nature for dominion, and the present state of cultivation and progress speaks more plainly than words of the result. Mr. Singer has witnessed the gradual transformation of the wilderness into one of the finest farming sections in Williams County, is a successful farmer himself, and a large stock dealer. He was united in marriage to Harriet Kentner, of Carroll County, Ohio, March 19, 1859, and to this union have been born seven children—Calvin, Willis, Margaret, Clara. Howard, Ambrose and George. Mr. Singer saw active service in the late war. He enlisted in 1861 in the Thirty-eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was a soldier for over three years. Mrs. S. is a member of the Disciples' Church of Edon, and Mr. Singer belongs to the mystic brotherhood of Masons.

The Baldwin Brothers - Watch for Tiny Clues and Spellings in the Census Records

Francis B Baldwin and his brother, Ambrose, both joined Co C 111th OVI - Francis returned home and lived a long life in Williams Co, OH, but Ambrose died in battle.  Finding the Baldwin brothers was a bit difficult as the 1850 and 1860 Brady Twp federal census records listed the family name as Boldwin so it took a few different searches to find them.  Then I encountered two different locations for Francis' marriage - one in Huron Co and the other in Fulton Co, OH (contiguous county with Williams).  My advice - keep plugging away; don't give up!!  Also look for clues to give you a sense of what life was like for the people - 1874 was a significant year for the Baldwins.

Here's what I found:

First of all this is the pension record where Ambrose and Francis' mother, Annie E Baldwin, applied for pension based on Ambrose's CW service.  Note the date as 1874.

Dear Reader.........from time to time I stumble onto information that augments prior postings and want to update as I find time.  The original posting is Carnahan Divorce but here is more data on John Carnahan - I worked backwards from the obit of his daughter, Jennie Carnahan Deuchar, to develop this detailing:


John Jackson Carnahan, born 26 Feb 1807, probably Chillicothe, OH, was first married to Rachel Vandever(e), 24 Jan 1829/1830 in Ross Co, OH. The couple had seven children:

Sometime after his first wife’s death, John Carnahan moved his family to NW Ohio where in Defiance Co, OH on 26 Oct 1856 (Marriage V1 p136) he married Mrs. Susannah Clark, a widow, b. 1820, PA; she was formerly Susan Griffith who had married Thomas Clark in Williams Co, OH on 11 Mar 1839 (Marriage V1 p34).  The Clarks were parents of at least five children:

After the divorce:


John evidently had moved to Kendalville, IN.  In the 1880 Elkhart, Elkhart Co, IN federal census p547 a John Carnahan was listed as John 73 OH with PA native parents, flagman on railroad, and he lived with the Oscar and Mary W. Mott family. His obit mentioned that he was a longtime resident of Kendalville and his daughter, Mrs. Deuchar, survived him.  There was no mention of his marriage to Susannah.

John Carnahan died at Elkhart on Tuesday and his remains were brought to Bryan Wednesday for burial.  He was formerly a resident of Bryan and enlisted in Co E 38th OVI in December 1861.  In Apr 1863 he was discharged from the service on a surgeon’s certificate of disability.  He returned to Bryan and remained here several years, serving the village as marshal for one or two terms.  He subsequently moved to Elkhart where he resided for nearly a quarter century. He was about 75 years of age.

David Crick participated in the Civil War as a private in Co E 14th OVI, where most of those recruited were from Defiance Co, OH; a headstone was ordered by the GAR post for him in Hicksville, Defiance Co, OH c30 Nov 1894.

He applied for a CW pension 22 Mar 1883; no widow’s pension application was attached to his file, leaving the possibility that his wife had died or there was a divorce.

On the expiration of term of service the original members (except veterans) were mustered out and the organization, composed of veterans and recruits, retained in the service until July 11, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.
