The Bryan Lawyer Who Was Married and Divorced Twice - Oscar C Beechler

The couple was married on 4 Feb 1879 in Dundee, Monroe Co, MI. (Marriage License data - She was 20 and he was 31.  Their witnesses, both from Dundee, MI were George Covell and Fred Sheer or Freer.)

 

Oscar charged that Agnes had been absent for more than three years and they had no children together.  He believed Alice lived in Glen Lord, Berrien Co, MI.  A legal notice appeared in The Tri-State Alliance beginning 13 Mar 1890 and running six consecutive weeks.  Oscar was granted a divorce.

 

Oscar, born May 1847 in Wayne Co, OH, was the son of George and Susan Hawkins Beechler. The Beechlers moved to this county c1848 and had the following children: Malona, Thomas, Mar, Elizabeth, John C, George Nicholas, Sarah, Susan, Oscar, Martha, Curtis W, and Xenophan.  His parents were Lancaster, PA natives - George Beechler (1800-1876) and mother Susan (1810-1903).  They are buried in the Fountain Grove Cemetery in Bryan, Williams Co, OH.

 

Agnes Wright (May 1860 Wooster, Wayne Co, OH –31 December 1943, Berrien Co, MI) was daughter of William C and Naomi Wright.  After the divorce she married Monroe Nathan Lord (1818-aft 1900), on 16 October 1890 in Benton Harbor, Berrien Co, MI; he was married before to Jane L. Austin who died in 1887; he was the father of three children. 

 

Note two things – 

1.  There is a considerable age gap between Agnes and Monroe Lord (about 42 Years) but that was not too unusual for the time.

2.  In Oscar’s divorce deposition he said Agnes lived in Glen Lord, Berrien Co, MI.  I wonder if he meant to say she was living with a Lord in Berrien.

Weston Goodspeed, The History of Williams Co, OH, 1882, p243 and 590, stated that Oscar was a lawyer in Bryan.

 

Divorce proceedings to end the Beechler marriage cMarch Term 1890.

 

Oscar married Anna Goller Stailey (10 May 1865 – 13 Dec 1945, Los Angeles, CA) on 22 Jan 1891 in Defiance Co, OH. She was the daughter of John and Christina Strahley Goller and the former of wife of Thomas J Staley/Stailey. (See - Anna Stailey v Thomas J. Stailey (Journal 14 p494 - 1 Dec 1888; Roll 46 case number 1962 – 1888; Journal 15 p3 – 28 Mar 1889 case number 1961)

            The case was continued in 1888.  The action shows an infant child, Albner; a visitation schedule was set but for some reason she’s not entitled to a divorce, but she must have obtained one later.)

Oscar Beechler’s obit in the Bryan Press, 9 Jan 1913, p4, stated that he died on 5 Jan 1913 and was buried in Fountain Grove Cemetery in Bryan.  He was born in Center Twp 66 years before and lived in Ney and Williams Center during his early years. He was twice married and divorced from both wives.

The Bryan Democrat (Bryan, OH), 7 January 1913 p1 c5 told a slightly different tale of Oscar’s life: Oscar C Beechler, a well-known attorney of Bryan and practically a life-long resident of Williams county, died at the home of Mrs Connie Boothman, South Main Street, following an illness of a week’s duration.

A week before his death he was found in his office in a critical condition, having suffered a stroke of paralysis.  The attack proved serious and he never fully regained consciousness.  At the time of his death he was about 67 years of age.

Mr Beechler was born in Wayne County, OH and in the early part of his life moved to Center Township.  He taught school for a number of years and studied law in the University at Ann Arbor, MI.  After graduating he moved to Bryan and began the practice of law in 1873.  He was connected with Philetus Smith in this profession for a number of years, but for the last few years he has conducted his practice alone.  He was an industrious citizen and in his younger days was prominent in all the affairs of Williams County.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 o’clock at the Presbyterian Church.  Rev E S Marshall will conduct the services and the chairman of the local bar association, Judge Charles E Bowersox, will also speak.  Interment will be made in the Fountain Grove Cemetery.

Who Was Barbara Wilcox?

Recently I researched the Barbara Wilcox, mentioned in the divorce cited below and expanded on the data I found, which is included in this post:

"In the 1880 Bryan federal census, p645A, Eliza Bacon 45 Wales and son David 17 OH lived together; Eliza was classified as a divorced lady.  Chauncey, according to the 1880 Bryan federal census p626 was 60 OH, who had a housekeeper, Barbara Wilcox 34 OH and her daughter Minnie 10 OH living with him. In 1887, Hillsdale Co, MI (Marriage Bk F p190) he had married a third time to this Barbara A. Wilcox, the former wife of SK Wilcox, who was named as CC’s wife and executor in his will, written in Williams Co, OH.  The children from his first marriage were listed as heirs plus son David G. Bacon of Chicago.  Sometime between 1880-1885 David had left his mother alone and moved to the “Windy City"

Barbara A Arris was born on 11 Dec 1845 and was the daughter of Jacob Arris and Mary Gross.

Chaney C Bacen married Barbara A Wilcox on 26 Nov 1887 in Amboy Twp, Hillsdale Co, MI by Peter Munk, JP with Mary and Rachel Munk as witnesses; he was 66 of Bryan, OH, born in Pulsainyre, OH; she was 40 also of Bryan, OH; she was born in Licking Co, OH.

"On 21 Dec 1887 Chauncey Bacon died of kidney failure and his remains were shipped back to Portage Co for burial ("Bryan Press", 29 Dec 1887; "Bryan Democrat", 22 Dec 1887, p5; Williams County Death Record, V2 p42).  Considering that CC and Barbara lived together for at least eight years before they married, and considering that CC did not live out the year of his marriage, Barbara may have persuaded him to make their relationship legal so she could benefit financially. His estate was settled by 4 Jan 1888.  According to the 1900 Bryan Ward 1, Pulaski Twp federal census p159, Barbara Bacon was listed as born Dec 1845 (54) OH widow with father born in Eng and mother born PA; she had 1 child who did not survive her and she lived with her grandson Earl Miser, born Nov 1892 (7) OH.  Third wife Barbara died on 13 Mar 1925 and was buried in the Bryan Fountain Grove Cemetery".

Richard A. Haskins, who recently was arrested on a charge of assault with intent to kill his wife, Malissa Haskins, filed a petition in common pleas court asking for divorce. The alleged assault occurred Sunday, July 2, and according to the petition filed by Mr. Haskins, his wife struck him with her fists and an iron stove lift. He asks for divorce because of alleged cruelty and neglect. Mr. and Mrs. Haskins were married at Toledo Jan. 1, 1906 - Pioneer Alliance.

This newspaper article doesn’t give any background on the couple but with some digging I found the marriage paths for each:

Here is a puzzle – Malissa and Richard are enumerated in 1900 as husband and wife; they do get married in Lucas Co, OH in 1906; so were they not married in 1900? Married in 1900, divorced sometime between 1900 and 1906 and remarried in 1906??

Ada Pearl Limpert (19 May 1891, Williams Co, OH - 5 May 1948, Center Twp, Williams Co, OH; burial 9 May 1948 Brown Cemetery, Center Twp, Williams Co, OH)

Married Harry W Blanchard, 16 Apr 1911, Williams Co, OH; divorce shortly after this as Harry was married about six months later (14 Nov 1911 in Marshall Co, IN); Harry was the son of James O Blanchard and Etta Goodwin.

Married George Gabriel, 25 Oct 1912, Steuben Co, IN – the marriage license states that Pearl was divorced; George was the son of Charles Gabriel and Louise Reshka.

Pearl’s death was a homicide as she was shot with a 22-caliber gun on a county road. An autopsy was performed but the results of the investigation are unknown.

Sometime after his first wife’s death, John Carnahan moved his family to NW Ohio where in Defiance Co, OH on 26 Oct 1856 (Marriage V1 p136) he married Mrs. Susannah Clark, a widow, b. 1820, PA; she was formerly Susan Griffith who had married Thomas Clark in Williams Co, OH on 11 Mar 1839 (Marriage V1 p34).  The Clarks were parents of at least five children:

After the divorce:


John evidently had moved to Kendalville, IN.  In the 1880 Elkhart, Elkhart Co, IN federal census p547 a John Carnahan was listed as John 73 OH with PA native parents, flagman on railroad, and he lived with the Oscar and Mary W. Mott family. His obit mentioned that he was a longtime resident of Kendalville and his daughter, Mrs. Deuchar, survived him.  There was no mention of his marriage to Susannah.

John Carnahan died at Elkhart on Tuesday and his remains were brought to Bryan Wednesday for burial.  He was formerly a resident of Bryan and enlisted in Co E 38th OVI in December 1861.  In Apr 1863 he was discharged from the service on a surgeon’s certificate of disability.  He returned to Bryan and remained here several years, serving the village as marshal for one or two terms.  He subsequently moved to Elkhart where he resided for nearly a quarter century. He was about 75 years of age.

I recently had a query concerning Viola Scoville who was married to Frank Touse; after finding out she had married a second time and her obit was under Viola Campbell, I was further asked whether Frank Touse had ever been the mayor of Pioneer, OH.  Although I do not presently know the answer to that, I thought I'd post what I did find in the hopes that maybe someone will recognize this family and wish to pass along some info to the original query-poster.

Richmond Bennett was arraigned last week, before Esq Teams and plead guilty to three charges, viz: Arson, burning the Catholic church in Florence, burglary and larceny, entering and stealing property from Solomon Scott’s house, also in Florence township.

The Grand Jury adjourned last Saturday after reporting 63 indictments.  Two indictments were found against Richmond Bennett, one for burglary and one for shooting with intent to kill.

The man is Jeremiah Dike, whom it is recorded, was born in Williams County, OH.  Nothing to date has been found in our county records to verify this.  Another mystery exists in that he is NOT found yet in any census before 1850.  If you have any info on this man, email me and I'll pass it along to a researcher who would like to know more about his ancestry.

Seventeenth Cavalry.-Col., John L. Beveridge; Lieut.-

Cols., Dennis J. Hynes, Hiram Hillard; Majs., Hiram Hillard,

Lucius C. Matlack, Philip E. Fisher, Jesse D. Butts, Charles

Parker. This regiment was organized under special authority

from the war department, issued Sept. 11, 1863, to Hon. John

F. Farnsworth. The rendezvous was established at St. Charles,

Kane county, and eight companies were mustered in on Jan. 22,

1864, for three years. Four other companies were mustered in

and the organization of the regiment completed Feb. 12, 1864.

By the close of the following April, 650 horses had been

brought in by the men under instruction from the cavalry

bureau and sold to the government. On May 3, the regiment

moved under orders from the general-in-chief to report to

Maj.-Gen. Rosecrans, commanding the Department of Missouri, at

St. Louis. For a period of 4 months the three battalions of

the regiment were separate and remote from each other, their

duties being mainly escort and provost guard duty. Among the

fights engaged in by the 2nd battalion may be named one near

Allen on the North Missouri railroad in July, one near the

Porsche hills, and a third near Rocheport. The service of the

regiment was wholly within the Department of the Missouri, and

while it did not experience any severe engagements, it

performed hard and valuable services in frequent skirmishes

with the enemy, in routing guerrilla parties, and in long and

weary marches. Its last important work was accompanying the

commissioners who went to Fort Smith to treat with the

Indians, at the great council held in Sept., 1865. It was

mustered out in Nov. and Dec., 1865, at Leavenworth, Kan.

A telegram was received in the city by Hiram McClure, of Wells Street, announcing the death of his father at Ashley, Ohio.  The funeral will be at Bryan, Ohio and Mr McClure left to be in attendance.

James C McClure was born c1826 in Holmes Co, OH and died c1895 in Ashley, DeKalb Co, IN; his military pension information corresponds with the 1883 pension application as certificate #163062.  His physical description was as follows: 5’10” in height with dark hair and dark complexion, tailor as occupation; service in Co G 101st PA Infantry and Co H 140th PA Infantry

Burglary – On Friday night McLure’s Merchant Tailor Shop was entered through a back window and robbed of clothing to the value of $250.  The villains executed the job with consummate skill, removing the glass from the sash without breaking it.  No clue to the perpetrators has been discovered.

Arrested – Since writing the above a fellow calling himself Davis was arrested near Stryker on suspicion of being concerned in the robbery of McLure’s Tailor Shop.  All the missing clothing, except one coat, was recovered and the fellow brought to this place and committed to jail to await an examination.  From the circumstances connected with the arrest there can be little doubt of a conviction.

Note - I am fairly sure this is McClure even though the article names the tailor as McLure.

In the 1870 Bryan, Pulaski Twp federal census, p36, the family was listed as James 45 OH tailor, Harriet 42 PA, William (no age) PA, George 18 PA, Mary 15 PA, Etta Wright 19 PA, Eddie McClure 10 OH, and Hiram McClure 6 PA.  James may have been a Civil War soldier, but that has not been confirmed; if so, he applied for and received as a resident of Bryan, OH a CW veteran’s pension for disability to his knees and received as of Oct 1879 a payment of $12 per month.  The McClure family was enumerated in the 1880 Bryan, Pulaski Twp federal census  p647B, as James McClure 50 OH tailor, Harriet 51 PA, Edward 19 PA, James 16 PA.  Note that their youngest child’s name changed from Hiram to James.

In the 1883 Military Pensioners book there is a listing for James McClure of Bryan, OH who suffered from synovitis of the knees; he was born in 1831 and died in 1895 with burial in Brown Cemetery, Center Twp, Williams Co, OH.  His CW service was enumerated as Co G 101th and Co H 140th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (cert # 163, 062).

J. McClure, merchant tailor, Lockhart’s block, has a fine assortment of piece goods, from which he is prepared to make to order single garments or full suits in any style desired and guarantee fits.

In the Bryan newspapers, such as The Bryan Democrat, 4 Mar 1886, p5 c1, Jas. McClure, merchant tailor, was located on Lockharts Block, the southwest corner of the court square in Bryan.

James charged Harriett with being willfully absent for three years or more and gross neglect.  He brought RA Scott and AL Miller to court as witnesses.  A divorce was granted and Harriet was given $15 as alimony.  On 30 Oct 1886 in Wms Co James McClure remarried Mrs. Harriett M. McClure (Marriage V5 #893) so evidently the couple reconciled, but it appears to be only temporary because on 6 Mar 1888 James brought a suit for divorce again.  On 28 Nov 1888 he asked that the court papers be sent to Fulton Co, OH; nothing further is known.

The couple was married on 18 Mar 1877 in Hillsdale Co, MI at the residence of John S. Drake.  On 8 Jan 1878 Biancy claimed that Edward abandoned her and gave no support.  At first this action was dismissed but later a divorce was granted in November 1889.

Some possibilities for Edward B Kahl:

There is an Edward Kahl b1859 OH laborer living in Bryan, OH c1880 residing as a boarder of John Yates.

There is a Charles (39 Prussia carpenter) and Louisa (29 Prussia) Kahl with a one-year old son, Edward, living in 1860 Bucyrus, Crawford Co, OH; other siblings are Louisa and Charley Kahl.  The mother’s maiden name was Kear/Hear; they were married on 1 June 1856 in Crawford Co, OH..
