Mary Jane Jones Alberts v Julius Alberts (Journal 14 p50; Roll 44 Box 145 case number 1676 – 6 Oct 1886)

The couple was married in Bryan, Pulaski Twp, Williams County, OH on 18 Nov 1884 (Marriage V5 #544) as Jane Jones and Julle Albert. Mary Jane stated that Julius was guilty of gross neglect for more than one year. He was a strong, able-bodied man who was in constant receipt of wages sufficient to support her, but he was a drunk.  She stated that she was compelled to live on her own exertions. Mary Jane wanted a divorce and reasonable alimony, both of which she received.

I have searched for some other reference to this couple, but have found nothing so far.

The couple was married on 2 Apr 1874 in Williams Co, OH.  Mary Ann gave a list of her children with their ages:

Mary Ann stated that George was guilty of extreme cruelty with violent assaults upon her and striking her on the head with his fist.  He knocked her down to the floor and threatened her life.  She was compelled to run away from home.  His residence was unknown to her as of 13 June 1889.  She wanted a divorce, reasonable alimony, and custody of the children.  A divorce was granted but she had to pay the court costs.  She did receive custody of the children.

Here’s what I found on this couple:

George Allen Tanner, son of James and Lucy Mudge Tanner, was born on 1 June 1844 in OH; he died on 5 July 1910.

Mary Ann Stantz, the daughter of Henry and Susan Harman Stantz, was born on 1 June 1851 in Holmes Co, OH died on 19 July 1912 in Marshall, Calhoun Co, MI.  The parents were buried in West Buffalo Cem, Florence Twp, Williams Co, OH.

This could be a possible next marriage for George Tanner but this needs more research.

Mary filed for divorce on 25 May 1889; the case was continued on 25 Nov 1889; then the case was settled on 24 Mar 1890:
Mary Ann charged George with extreme cruelty and gross neglect.  She had to pay the court costs.  Their children were listed as:
Frank H, Pheba A, Sharas E (I think this is Thomas), Allen G, Arthur W, Lucinda J, Harry L, Sarah S, and John H.  It would appear that she received a divorce.

Here is a possible next marriage for Mary:

William M Couts and Mary Stants Tanner were married in Hillsdale Co, MI on 18 Sept 1889 and had a son, Charles J. Couts on 25 Nov 1889 in Williams Co, OH (Births V2 p119). Note that the divorce was awarded on 24 Mar 1890. William, the son of Thomas and Matilda McManus Couts, was born in Crawford Co, OH, and not married before whereas Mary Tanner was married once before.  Their witnesses (the minister's wife) would suggest perhaps an elopement.

In 1891 the couple had a son, Wilbur T Couts.

Both boys are living in Center Twp, Williams Co, OH with their grandmother, Matilda Couts in 1900.  It appears by 1902 William Couts has married again.

Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Travis (Roll 47)

Sarah A. McMannis Joliff Travis v Miles Leroy Travis (Journal 15 p133 - 30 Nov 1889; Roll 47 Box 158 case number 2106 – 2 Aug 1889)

The couple was married at Montpelier, Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH on 3 Nov 1875 (Marriage, V4 p423), but in Sarah’s application for this divorce the date was stated as 3 Oct 1875.  Also note that Sarah A. was Mrs. Nathan Joliff; therefore, her maiden name was McMannis.

Sarah stated that Miles was willfully absent for more than three years.  In May 1880 “he got my keys, unlocked my private room, and carried away furniture and bedding valued at $20 and he’s never returned.”  Sarah stated that they owned Lot 54 in Montpelier.  Her errant husband may be living in Ottawa Co, OH.  A divorce was granted.

Here’s what I was able to find on the couple:

According to the Bryan Democrat, 13 Feb 1890, Sarah A and Miles Travis sold to Elizabeth Creuse, Lot 39 in Snyder’s Third Addition, Montpelier, for $1,000.

Miles Travis, the son of Joshua and Juliette McFall Travis, was born in NY on 14 Sept 1829.  He died on 2 May 1914 @ 84Y 7M 18D in Northwest Twp, Williams Co, OH; he was buried in Heritage Cemetery; his online death certificate stated he was a widower.

Sarah A Joliff, possibly the daughter of Charles and Nancy McMannis, was born in March 1836, possibly in Streesboro, Portage Co, OH, and died in Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH on 17 Mar 1907.  Her first husband was Nathan Jolliff (b c1830, Plain Twp, Wayne Co, OH), whom she married in Wooster, Wayne Co, OH on 1 July 1855. Her death certificate (Deaths, V3 p134) as Sarah A. Travis listed her as “widowed”.

Miles Travis/Hannah A Travis were the parents of Joshua Travis, born 7 Apr 1869 in Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH (Births, V1 p10).

Miles Travis/Anna L. Calvin were the parents of George Travis, born 23 Sept 1871 in Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH (Births, V1 p37).  It would appear that Miles was first married to Hannah Calvin or Coleman.

The couple was married on 12 Jan 1886 in Williams Co, OH (Marriage V5 #779). BTW, some of the divorce cases do NOT give a marriage date or place; this one did not.  I start the detailings with that data (if I can find it), but I often have to do the research using other sources, so if you want to look at the actual case, which I encourage you to do, you may not find the marriage data within the documents.

David charged Alida with adultery and he wanted custody of their child plus the divorce.  This case had a great deal of witness summons such as:

This is all I had to work with despite many frames of witness summons on microfilm.

Alida charged David with extreme cruelty on a cross petition.  Adultery was not proven but Alida received the divorce.  David was found to be guilty of gross neglect.  A visitation schedule for child Sina Alberta Temple was set and reasonable alimony of $500.

Sina Alvista “Bertha” Temple, daughter of DE Temple and Lydia Myres, was born on 12 Sept 1887 in Montpelier, Williams Co, OH (Births V2 p101).

David E. Temple, son of (William) Benjamin and Mary Carter Temple, was born in Nov 1860, probably Williams Co, OH.  Father Benjamin Temple was a native of Columbiana Co, OH; second wife Sarah was a native of Seneca Co, OH.

It is tempting to assume Sarah (see later census info) is his mother, but the marriage records for Williams Co, OH show two marriages for Benjamin Temple.

Fountain Grove Cemetery Records (Bryan, OH) show Frank Eager (1855-1934) was buried beside his wife Kate Meek Eager (Dec 1856 – 2 Jan 1896).  Since he did not die until 1934, there must have been a divorce sometime between 1900-1910 between Frank and Alida, who was listed in the next two census records as “widow”.

Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Stahl (Roll 47)

William A. Stahl v Aramintha A. Wallace Stahl (Journal 15 p151 – December 1889; Roll 47 Box 161 case number 2070 – 27 Apr 1889)

William Stahl stated that the couple was married on 4 Aug 1865 in Washington Twp, Stark Co, OH. Note that online data states the couple was married on 4 Aug 1853 in Stark Co, OH by ME Church minister, HD Fisher. They had eight children, all grown.  William charged his wife with being willfully absent for more than three years, gross neglect, and refusal to cohabit for more than six years.

His witness was Belinda J. Parnacot (Mrs. Henry Parnacot), 30 years old, who lived in Canton, OH.  The Stahls are her parents.  She said her father lives in Bryan, OH and her mother lives in Alliance, OH.  The couple separated six years ago on 17 July 1883.  Her father did not swear or abuse Aramintha nor did he drink to excess.  He always provided for his family.  Upon the separation her mother got the property.  (Note that in Belinda’s death information her father is listed, but not her mother.)

Another witness gave testimony – Annie Numan (Mrs Kie Numan), 29 of Canton, OH.  Annie is the daughter of this couple.  She said she had no letter from her father but her mother lives in Alliance, OH.  Someone bought property from her father and her mother does not have this real estate.

As you can see there are two different points of view from the two daughters.  It is unclear whether this action resulted in a divorce.  There was a continuance in the proceedings in December 1889.

William A. Stahl was born c1831 in PA; poss died c1903.  Nothing further is known of him aft 1889.

Armintha D. Wallace Stahl, born on 12 Oct 1833 in Stark Co, OH or Columbiana Co, OH, was the daughter of William Wallace and Eliza Grice, both OH natives.  She died on 8 Feb 1915 in Alliance, Stark Co, OH @81Y 3M 26D, with burial in the Alliance City Cemetery. Her death certificate stated she was a widow.

Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Snyder (Roll 47)

Sarah Nancy Housenick Snyder v Martin W. Snyder (Journal 15 p17 – 22 May 1889; p57 – June 1889; Roll 47 case number 2082 – 25 May 1889)

The couple was married at Ottawa, Putnam Co, OH on 18 Aug 1886(??).  An online source gives the date as 18 Aug 1888, same location. They had a son Otis Snyder who was 1 year old on 25 Sept 1888. (Williams Co, OH Birth V2 p110 shows birth date of Otis Snider, born 25 Sept 1888, Stryker, Williams Co, to Mastin Snyder and Sarah Houseneck).

According to Sarah, Martin left her on 22 Sept 1888 and then she was delivered of a child.  Martin has neglected them and refused to visit, live with, or contribute to their support.  Sarah was an orphan and had no place to live except for the kindness of other relatives and friends.  Martin was extremely cruel to her.  He owned property in Adams Twp, Defiance Co, OH.  Sarah wants a divorce and reasonable alimony.  She had two witnesses for her but the names are extremely difficult to decipher – S. Olmstead and Mary Olmstead, which fits from 1900 federal census below.  The journal stated there was a meeting in chambers at Paulding, OH and Sarah was granted a temporary injunction  from Martin trying to sell property.

A divorce was granted with Martin paying court costs and alimony of $1,000 plus the court placed a lien on real estate.

Now, on the surface I had very little information to go on, but once I started chasing down the census, other things fell into place.  Here’s what I found:

Since Sarah stated she was an orphan I checked the death records for a possible parent and found the following: Elizabeth Housnick died on 15 Feb 1879 @56Y in Springfield Twp, Williams Co, OH (Death V1 p50 – native of Germany, widow, consumption).

Sarah N. Housenick, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Schaam Housenick, was born in Springfield Twp, Williams Co, OH in Nov 1860.

The couple was married in Wyandot Co, OH on 14 Aug 1883. Note that online marriages for this county give the date as 13 Aug 1883 and the bride was Katy Miller. John charged Catherine “Katie” with being willfully absent for three years or more.  A divorced was granted.

There was no mention of a child born to this couple, but I found the following:

The defendant’s deposition was taken in Wauseon, Fulton Co, OH.

This may be an example of a filing in Williams Co, OH to avoid scandal in neighboring Fulton Co, OH.

Anna had the following witness statements:

1.  James McClure, 56Y, Wauseon tailor.  He said he had dozens of conversations with Anna because she thought Walter was running around with other women. 

2.  Mary Johnson – She said Anna told her Anna followed Walter to a bad house.

3.  Ollie Parmenter – Anna told her Walter was going to a bad house and he had venereal disease.  This was in a letter that Ollie burned.

4.  Mrs. Delila Cornell, 58 Y, had known Anna for 33 Y – Anna believed Mrs. William Lambert was the other woman.

5.  Cyrus Arnold, cabinet maker in Wauseon

6.  Harlan B. Hall of Hyde, Darke Co, OH – Walter went to hotels with other women – Eddith Warren was one of them

The Bryan Democrat, 28 Mar 1889

A frame residence on South Portland Street, owned by PS Garlow and for some time past occupied by Mrs Walter Scott, caught fire about 5 Monday afternoon and was badly damaged.  The steamer was on hand promptly and saved the framework of the building.  The origin of the fire is a mystery.  Mrs. Scott was moving out of the house and within half an hour after the last load was taken out of the house the fire alarm was sounded.  Mr Garlow’s loss is fully covered by insurance.

This case has a huge number of documents with accusations and counter-accusations.  She requested a reasonable alimony.  For example on 15 Nov 1889 there was a continuance granted.

In Journal 15 p290-292 case #2092 for 28 Mar 1890 there was an answer and cross petition.  Anna again charged Walter with extreme cruelty.  He owned "The Model Mills" in Bryan.  On p292 Anna stated she owned real estate in Bryan; she wanted all wearing apparel, the house and household goods, the furniture, and a reasonable alimony; at the time of the divorce she had to pay court costs but she received a fair settlement.

Anna Ames was born c1834 in Meadville, PA; husband Walter Scott was born in Aug 1828 in Chautauqua Co, NY, possibly the son of Pandura and Eunice Whitmore Scott of Stockton, Chautauqua Co, NY.

The couple had a son, Milan H. Scott, born 31 Jan 1865 in Enterprise, PA; Milan died in Toledo, Lucas Co, OH on 6 Sept 1905.

The couple was married at the residence of her father in Williams Co, OH on 23 May 1889 (Marriage V5 #1509).  They have a female child.  On 5 June 1889 Jacob left Caroline and would not perform any of his marriage vows.  He gave her no support.  Caroline lived off the charity of her parents while Jacob owned real estate, a 3-year old bay mare, and several buggies.  Daniel Rockey and Jacob Miller were summoned to give evidence, but it’s unclear for which side.  There was no statement as to the final outcome of this action.

Caroline Zeiter, 26 Dec 1870, Williams Co, OH (Birth V1 p25) – 1964, was the daughter of Adam and Elizabeth Burkhardt Zeiter, natives of Crawford Co, OH, who married in Williams Co, OH on 12 Apr 1870 (Marriage V4 p110).  Caroline and her husband, James Milton Quinn (6 Sept 1870 – 31 Mar 1963, Williams Co, OH) were buried in Edon Cemetery, Florence Twp, Williams Co, OH.

The couple was married in West Unity, Brady Twp, Williams Co, OH on 3 July 1887 (Marriage V5 #1006).  The couple did not have any children.  Jennie charged her husband with providing no support or maintenance for the necessities of life.  She has lived off the charity of others and her own labor for support.  She stated that Elmer abandoned her immediately after the marriage and was guilty of neglect and extreme cruelty.

Furthermore, she married him when she was 16 and he was 24.  She married against her will or the wishes of her living parents.  Elmer used fraud and deceit.  He told her he had consent from her mother and stated such to the probate judge when he obtained a license, but in truth he did not have what he swore to the judge.  He told the judge that Jennie was 18 instead of her true age of 16.  He never intended to live with her and was guilty of a fraudulent marriage contract.

There were several continuances. The divorce info did not state whether a divorce was actually granted. I have not been able to find info on Jennie but I was able to uncover some data on errant husband, Elmer.

Elmer, born Feb 1862 in Williams Co, OH, was the son of Abraham Wellington and Eliza/Louisa J Combs Pickle.  The Pickle family was listed in the 1850 Brady Twp, Williams Co, OH but then moved to Fulton Co, OH, and much later settled in Ransom, Hillsdale Co, MI and parts West.

Jasper Rogers was the executor of the estate of Samuel Cain, Delilah Owen’s father.  Along with Jasper, Delilah sued the following people:

On 1 Mar 1887 Samuel Cain died in Williams Co, OH.

Cain- At his home two miles north of Columbia, this county, on Thursday, at noon, March 24, 1887, of pneumonia, Samuel Cain, aged 76 years 8 months 20 days.

Samuel Cain was born in Beaver County, Penn., July 4, 1810 and was married in the same state to Elizabeth Mocherman. In 1829 he moved to Harrison County this state and remained there two years; thence he moved to Stark County where he remained six years; thence to Richland County remaining one year; was a short time in Henry County and in 1838 came to Florence Township this county and settled in Section No. 1, recently known as the John Brubaker farm. In 1844 he sold that farm and bought 80 acres, the farm now owned by Adam Briggle. He was probably the second settler in Florence Township. His wife died June 11, 1852, leaving him a family of twelve children, eight of whom survive him. John, the oldest son, was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 30, 1868.

He married a second wife, Rachel Meek, March 3, 1858 and by her became the father of eleven children. Seventeen children are still living. About the close of the war he moved to Northwest Township on the farm from which he was buried. Mr. Cain was one of the wide awake jolly men; always up and coming; and was seldom seen out of humor; he lived beyond the allotted time we cannot but feel sad that he is dead.
