Not that anyone probably noticed but I've been absent for a bit.  Family research doesn't just spring from the trees (no pun intended) so that's what I've been doing.  One of my projects this last month was to help a friend of our daughter with her genealogy. I started out with a few bits and bobs and found several lines in Williams County, so I'm going to post what I know.  I only researched her direct line (a lot to do in a short period of time), so if you're familiar with this line, drop me a comment or shoot me an email; I'll pass it along to her.

Update Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Dailey (Roll 47)

There are two things that need to be mentioned about this case.

1.  The spelling of the wife is all over the map – Lusina, Lusena, Suannah, etc so I tried to keep it as accurate per document as possible.

2.  This is another is a long line of documents for a divorce.  This time it is the husband, Jeremiah, who wanted a divorce.  As was the case before, Lusena asked for a dismissal and the court agreed.  Here is the information from the latest proceeding uncovered for the couple.

Jeremiah stated that the couple was married on 15 April 1845 in Maumee City, Lucas Co, OH. (Note different date from the Roll 28 info).  He said Lusina was guilty of gross neglect and had abandoned him.  She refused to live with him for three years or more. 

Lusina in her answer denied these charges.  She inherited 11 acres of property in Wood Co, OH valued at $1,000.  In 1860 Jeremiah converted this as his own property and later he conveyed property of Lot 6 Bostater’s Addition in Bryan (but never mentioned in proceeding to whom he conveyed this).  Lusina was in poor health and needed the rent from land at $5-6.50 per month.  She said Jeremiah is in good health and able to work.  He owned Lot 268 Edgerton and Trevitt’s Addition in Bryan where the family homestead sat.  Later Lusina wanted the case to be dismissed.  Evidently it was dismissed.  Journal 15 shows that on 17 July 1889 the divorce action was indeed dismissed recorded as Jeremiah Dailey v Lusena L Dailey.

Susanna Lucina/Lusena Philips Dailey v Jeremiah E. Dailey (Journal 8 p398 - 3 Nov 1875; p489 - 9 Mar 1876; p539 - 22 May 1876; Roll 28 case number 40; Roll 47)

A. Rapp, a Catholic priest, married the couple in Maumee, Lucas Co, OH on 21 Apr 1845.  Susanna told the court the date was 15 May 1846. The family was enumerated in the 1850 Troy, Wood Co, OH federal census, p218, as Jeremiah Dailey 26 CAN, Susan 25 NY, and children John 3 OH, Mary M 4 OH, and Sarah 1 OH; his parents Cornelia and Catherine Dailey, both natives of Ireland, were next door neighbors along with Jeremiah’s siblings.  In the 1860 Bryan, Pulaski Twp federal census, p33, the family was listed as Jeremiah Dailey 35 Upper Canada, Susan 34 NY, and children all born in Ohio, Mary 14, John 12, Sarah 10, Jeremiah 8, and Alice 2.  In the 1870 Bryan federal census, p43, the family appeared as Jeremiah 45 CAN teamster, Luena 44 NY, Jeremiah 19, Alice 13, and Jennie 5.

Susanna was a resident of Ohio for more than 30 years and more than 20 years of those were in Wms Co.  She stated that on 1 Apr 1871 in Bryan Jeremiah was violent to her; in fact a year after they married he was violent and abusive, and he refused to buy her clothing.  On 15 Sept 1873 he was cruel and neglectful and left her for a time. She catalogued abuse on 20 July 1874 when he refused her a table to eat on and proper food.  On 20 May 1875 he kicked her out of their home.  Susan stated that she was 48 years old and the last four years she has been in poor and feeble health, living through charity of her friends and neighbors in Pulaski Twp; she even asked for help from the township trustees.  On 15 Jan 1874 he committed assault and battery on her. 

The couple had the following children: Mary (28) married to Byron DeLong, John (27), Jeremiah S. (24), Alva Alice B. (18), a child named Sarah (b1850) who died young, and Jennie (10).  Jeremiah owned Lot #268 in Edgerton and Trevitt Addition, Bryan, valued at $2800 plus much personal property.    Throughout the course of these proceedings Susana amended her petition, asked for reasonable alimony of $300 one time and $110 another. This case was dismissed.

According to the 1880 Bryan federal census, p641B, the Dailey household appeared as JE 55 CAN street commissioner with Irish parentage, Jeremiah 27 OH laborer, Lucena 54 NY with Massachusetts parentage, and Jennie 15 OH.  Jeremiah Dailey (1824 - 1901) and Lusena, his wife, (1826 - 1896) were buried together in the Bryan Fountain Grove Cemetery.  Lusena’s obit in The Bryan Democrat, 3 Sept 1896 p5 c5, stated that Lusena L. Phillips Dailey was born in Canandaigua, NY on 28 Jan 1826 and died 17 Aug 1896 at 70Y 6M 19D.  She was the mother of eight children with five preceding her in death.  She left a husband, a son, and two daughters to mourn her.

Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Burke (Roll 46)

Luella S. Orewiler Burke v Galen L. Burke (Journal 14 p450 - 23 Nov 1888; p538 - 18 Mar 1889; Journal 15 case number 1980 – 5 July 1889; p86 – 12 Nov 1889; p206 – 3 Mar 1890; p387 – 28 June 1890; Roll 46 case number 1980 – 1888)

The couple was married in Wms Co on 30 Sept 1885 (Marriage V5 #717). This case was continued multiple times.  They had a son Lee Burke, born 2 Aug 1887 in Pioneer, Madison Twp, Williams Co, OH. The first journal entries do not give reasons for this divorce action, but the final one stated he was guilty of gross neglect of more than three years. There was a continuance in Mar 1890 and on 28 June 1890 the court issued a divorce.  Luella’s statements were deemed true, that she had a child, Lee O Burke, and was a proper and fit mother; she received custody of Lee.  She was also to receive a reasonable alimony, a divorce, and Galen was to pay her $300 on a schedule for three years plus he had to pay court costs.

Galen (19 June 1856, OH – 5 May 1921, Florence Twp, Williams Co, OH; buried in Edon Cem) was the son of Jonathan and Phoebe Bratton Burke.

Jonathan Burke was a civic-minded fellow as he appeared on a grand jury list as a representative of Florence Twp in the May Term of 1883.

Updated Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Knight

Matilda Albright Knight v Ezra O. Knight (Journal 15 p61 - 16 July 1889 case number 2064; Roll 47 Box 157 case number 2064 – 10 Apr 1889) – see Albright divorce action

The couple was married on 17 Aug 1871 in Williams Co, OH (Marriage V4 p185). 

Matilda charged Ezra with being willfully absent for more than three years.  He gave her no support for food, clothing, etc.  On 27 Dec 1888 he was a non-resident of San Pedro, CA where he is said to have obtained a divorce from her.  They have a son, Charles, now 16 who lived with his mother.  Matilda “Tillie” Knight was given clear title to Lot 36 Allen’s Addition, Bryan, OH as alimony.  A notice of divorce was posted in the Bryan Democrat, 18 Apr 1889, which ran for six consecutive weeks.  The divorce was granted.

Ezra Knight and Matilda Albright, both residents of Bryan, were married about 17 years ago.  One child was the fruit of the union.  They succeeded in securing a neat little brick residence in the east part of town.  Some 4-5 years ago Knight went to California ostensibly to earn better wages.  Last fall he came back, loitered around town for a few weeks, put a mortgage debt of $100 on the property, and then went back to California.  Later it was learned that he had obtained a divorce in California and was seeking to obtain possession of the property or to dispose of it, whereupon Mrs. Knight filed a petition in Common Pleas praying for a decree of divorce from Mr. Knight, the custody of the child, and possession of the property.  The case came up before Judge Sutphen Monday afternoon and after a brief but comprehensive hearing a decree was ordered and the prayer of the petition granted.

Matilda Albright, (Aug 1852 Williams Co, OH – 24 Jan 1939 in Williams Co, OH; buried in Fountain Grove Cem, Bryan, OH as Matilda Marsh), was the daughter of Gideon and Catherine Deatz Albright. The following is found in my detailing of the Albrights in another post:

The Albrights were enumerated in the 1860 Pulaski Twp, Wms Co, OH federal census p43 on 28 June 1860 as follows: Gideon 32 PA, Catherine 25 OH, Matilda 7 OH, William 6 OH, Jemima 3 OH, and Mary 1 OH.  This couple would eventually have a total of six children all born in this county: Matilda (Aug 1852-1939; m1 Ezra O. Knight, 17 Aug 1871; divorced 1888; m2 William Ervin Marsh, 7 May 1899); William (1854-pos bef 1870); Regena/Jennie (Nov 1856-aft 1930, Cumberland MD; m. Joseph Lippold c1879); Mary (1858-Jan 1882; m. **Wilcox); Benjamin F. (May 1861- cNov 1938; m. Gertrude Kampf, 4 Mar 1886); Anna Florence (1863-8 June 1938; m. William S. Stackhouse, 30 Jul 1888).

The Albrights were again found in the federal census records for 1870 Bryan, Pulaski Twp p17 with five of their children, as Gideon 40 PA, Catherine 38 OH, Jennie 13 OH, Mary 12 OH, Benjamin 9 OH, Anna 7 OH, and Matilda 18 OH domestic servant.

Ezra was the son of Samuel and Amanda Jane Johnson Knight who were listed in the 1870 Bryan, Pulaski Twp federal census p18, as Samuel 45 PA carpenter, Amanda 41 OH, Alwilda 22 OH, Ezra O 19 OH works in stave factory, Joe P 16 OH, Milo O 13 OH, Emma L 11 OH. Samuel D. and wife Amanda were married in Wayne Co, OH on 25 Oct 1847.

The Knight family was enumerated in the 1880 Bryan, Pulaski Twp federal census p632 and 655B as Ezra Knight 28/29 OH brakeman, Matilda 26/27 OH, and Charles 7/9 OH.  The census taker possibly made some mistakes and returned to the neighborhood as several surrounding families were listed twice with different particulars.  According to The Bryan Press, 15 Dec 1881 p5 c1, Ezra Knight and partner Frank M. Wise had opened up a neat little meat market in JW Smith’s wareroom and were selling best cuts of meat for only ten cents.

After the divorce on 7 May 1889 Mrs. Tillie Knight married William Irvin Marsh in Williams Co, OH (Marriage V8 p28). 

William had been married before to Lanetta T. Altaffer who died on 2 Oct 1896.  The Marshs were listed in the 1900 Bryan, Pulaski Twp federal census p161 East Mulberry St as Irwin W Dec 1847 (52) OH house carpenter, Tillie Aug 1852 (47) OH, Dessey Jan 1884 (16) OH.

In 1910 William E. Marsh and wife Tillie lived on Walnut St according to the 1910 Bryan federal census p173 and by 1920 p140 Tillie Marsh 67 OH widow was still residing on Walnut St. William died on 16 Mar 1916 and was buried in Shiffler Cem, Jefferson Twp, next to his first wife.  Matilda died on 24 Jan 1939 and was buried in the Bryan Fountain Grove Cem as Matilda (Knight) Marsh.

So what happened to Ezra Knight?  We know he said he obtained a divorce in California. 

There is a marriage record for Ezra O. Knight 38 OH who married Mattie Lewis on 17 Apr 1889 in Los Angeles Co, CA.

According to a 1900 census it would appear that he married an Addie Hanscom c1896.

            The couple was married on 30 Apr 1882 in Defiance Co, OH. The case was continued in 1888.  On 26 Oct 1886 in Defiance Co, OH a son, RR Stailey, was born to Anna Goller and Thomas J. Stailey. This action shows an infant child, Albner; a visitation schedule was set but for some reason she’s not entitled to a divorce at that time but did obtain one later.

Oscar Beechler married Anna Goller Stailey (10 May 1865 – 13 Dec 1945, Los Angeles, CA) on 22 Jan 1891 in Defiance Co, OH. She was the daughter of John and Christina Strahley Goller and the former of wife of Thomas J Staley/Stailey.

Anna was from the Defiance Co, OH area as evidenced by the 1870 federal census:

Brickwall - Walker and Swain

Two early "settlers" (passing through the county) of Millcreek Twp, Williams Co, OH meld together for marriages by two sisters to two brothers.  John Walker appeared on the 1850 census with four daughters and an unknown John Smith, aged 11.  Joshaway Swain also noted on the 1850 census appeared with much younger wife and several sons.  There is a great deal of data for both men, some reasonable and some confusing.  Neither settler stayed very long in Williams Co, OH so there were scant records, but perhaps what I’ve pieced together can be help.  As always, if you know more about these people, please email me.

In researching early settlers in Williams Co, OH to help people find connections for applying for First Families of Williams Co, OH status, I checked out the McNabb family in Millcreek Twp.  This family moved to Amboy Twp, Hillsdale Co, MI before 1864 as they are not included in the 1864 Atlas.  My big puzzle is the daughters, Mary and Sarah.  There is a lot of online data tying them into marriages with Amsbaugh and Rutledge, which could very well be accurate but something just doesn't seem right.  If you can shed any light on these McNabb, email me.

From the 1870 census one sees a discrepancy on ages of Mary and Sarah; also both girls should be married and having children if the Rutledge/Amsbaugh marriages are correct.  By the 1880 census the girls are no longer living in the household with their parents as Addison had died, but Winney is living next door to Solomon and Mary Rutledge, which would give credence to the possibility that her daughter Mary did marry Solomon.  It’s the mysterious 1870 census that makes one wonder why the two “married” women are living with the parents.  This is possible if

1. One or both of the parents are ill

2. One or both of the girls are ill or pregnant

3. One or both of the girls have separated from the husbands

I was researching the Christopher Spade family recently and found this information on a very early Millcreek Twp, Williams Co, OH family.

Obit in undocumented newspaper, written by JW Lilly, her pastor: Anna Margaret Spade, nee Clarke departed this life near West Unity, Ohio, Oct. 23rd, 1890, aged 67 years, 11 months and 3 days. The funeral service occurred from the family residence, Saturday afternoon conducted by the writer. Sister Spade was born in Cumberland County, Penn. With her parents she removed to Richland County, Ohio, where in the fall of 1842 she was united in marriage with Christopher Spade, who died two years ago. In the spring of 1843 they located to Williams County, Ohio. The country was new, but the hardships and inconveniences of a pioneer life was patiently shared with her husband, and right well did she perform her part. For forty-six years she resided on the farm about three miles northeast of West Unity. She was converted when but thirteen years of age, and united with the Church of God. In a few years she became identified with the church of the United Brethren in Christ of which she was a member nearly fifty years. She had a clear experience, and the strength of her faith in the Lord, was indicated by her ever-Christian life. She was highly esteemed in the community where she lives, and exerted a wide influence for good. Always interested in the salvation of others, and the welfare of her own family. Her last moments were spent in prayer and her last words were, "Children I must leave you."

She leaves seven children, twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild, one sister, one brother, a large number of near relatives and many warm friends to mourn her departure. The triumphant death of this sainted mother should be a solace to the sorrowing ones; her hallowed influence a benediction upon their lives, and an inspiration to meet her in heaven.

Excerpt of Divorce Detailing by Pam Lash - On 15 Sept 1877 he (Charles) used abusive language and dragged her out of a chair to a length of 30 feet by her hair, kicking and wounding her.  She tolerated this for the sake of her children, but in Feb 1878 she filed for a divorce but was refused. On 12 Nov 1878 he threatened to bash out her brains with a chair and kick the heart out of her, while striking her repeatedly.  She could not bear this behavior any longer and refiled for relief.  Thus this story was repeated for the Williams County, Ohio Civil and Criminal Court (Journal 10 p108 - Mar 1879; Roll 33 case number 549 - Feb 1878). She wanted custody of the children and provided their names and birthdates.  She also stated that Charles owned 80 acres of land in Millcreek and she wanted a portion of this to support her children.  She also stated that she was 35 years old and had been a resident of this county all her life.  Mary provided witnesses to her plight such as Frederick and John Bavin, Julia Ann Spade, John Laser, John Shook, John Kirkenburg, Margaret E. White, Alfred S. Hendricks, George Frick, William Denman, Joseph Greek, and ES Davis.

Fred Spade of Pioneer is dead.  His lifeless body was found at an early hour Saturday morning in the barnyard of Mr. Baltosser, west and south of Alvordton.  He had probably been dead several hours.  From people who live in that part of the county we learn that Mr. Spade left Alvordton in the evening for his home at Pioneer.  He was driving a horse, which was formerly owned by Baltosser.  There were no witnesses to his taking off but it is surmised that soon after having left Alvordton Spade fell asleep and horse left to his own guidance turned from the road to Pioneer and went to the Baltosser place and turned into the barnyard.  In the yard the buggy collided with a farm wagon with force enough to throw Spade over the dash.  A fractured skull and horseshoe marks on his face seemed to indicate that the horse had either kicked him or stepped on him.  Death was probably instantaneous.  When discovered the horse, detached from the buggy, was eating straw from a stack not far distant.  An inquest was held after which the remains were removed to his home at Pioneer.  Fred Spade was well known in the northern part of the county where he had lived for many years.  He was credited with warm impulses and a generous heart and was possessed of many friends who regret his death.  Also an obit in Bryan Press, 8 Feb 1900

Hands Across the Border with Steuben Co, IN

Martha Richie and I were asked to speak at the June 20^th meeting of the Steuben County Genealogical Society at the Carnegie Library of Angola, IN.  I discussed the history of WCGS, which began in 1981, and detailed our two sources of revenue – membership and publications. Marti showcased our WCGS website and the treasures one can find using it at www.wcgs-ogs.com.

Brickwall - Meyer

Recently I made contact with a researcher who has a brickwall in the form of Adam Meyer, a native of Germany who came to the US in 1849 and eventually settled in Williams County, OH.  The researcher would like to prove relationship with this Adam and several other Meyer families in Brady Twp, Williams Co, OH. The supposition is that perhaps Adam is a brother to Abraham and Jacob Meyer, also living in Brady Twp.

I was able to locate the obituary of Adam Meyer which follows this and I’ve included some basic data for both Adam and Abraham.  If you as the reader have further information on this family, please contact me and I’ll forward your contact to the researcher.

Adam Meyer was born in Germany July 15, 1835 and died in Stryker, OH Saturday evening Feb 10, 1906 aged 70Y 6M 25D.  At the age of fourteen he came with his parents to America and the family settled in Seneca Co, OH.  Afterward they moved to Fulton Co, OH.  On Dec 26, 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Nielter.  To this union eight children were born, five sons, and three daughters.  The third daughter died about two years ago.  Mr. Meyer is also survived by two brothers.  In 1871 they moved with their family to a farm in Brady Township, Williams Co, OH.  About two years ago he moved to Stryker to spend the rest of his life.  The farm in Brady was improved when Mr. Meyer took possession of it, but by hard labor the land was soon turned into productive fields.  His parents belonged to the German Lutheran Church and their children were carefully brought up in the same faith.  The funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the Methodist Episcopal Church, the sermon being preached by Rev LH Gresslev.  Interment in the Floral Grove Cemetery near West Unity.
