Ann Vangeen v John Vangeen (Journal 9 p531 - 8 July 1878; Roll 32 case number 435 - 11 Apr/June 1878)
By Pamela Pattison Lash (updated 19 September 2021)
The couple was married on 20 Dec 1872, Holland, Ottawa Co, MI (no record of this found). Ann charged John with being a habitual drunk for three years or more. He lived in Holland, MI. A legal notice appeared in the "Fountain City Argus." A divorce was granted. Why would a wife from Holland, MI come to Williams Co, OH for a divorce? Was she related to a local resident or perhaps planning to marry some here? I have no answers to these questions.
There is a John Van Gun enumerated in 1860 for Holland, Ottawa Co, MI as John 22 Holland along with Peter 52 Holland. The 1900 Almshouse Farm, Holland, Ottawa Co, MI federal census showed a John b Aug 1838 Holland as a single inmate there. In the 1910 Polk Twp, Ottawa Co, MI federal census, p229A, which again is the county home, John Vangeen aged 70 was listed. Nothing further is known of either party.
