Edon Man Shoots Wife in Stomach
John Wisman Perpetrator of the Crime Now Safely Lodged in
County Jail
The village of Edon figured last Saturday morning in another
shooting episode. John Wisman of
that place went Friday to Montpelier, where he remained all day and returned
home in the evening under the influence of liquor, it is claimed. It is alleged that he commenced abusing
his wife and family who fled in terror to a neighboring home remaining away
until the next morning.
In the morning his wife, thinking his brother-in-law, who
works in Frank Hawk’s gristmill, might assist her in calming him, went there
for help. Her husband followed her
and catching up, whipped out a revolver and shot her in the stomach. The bullet followed a peculiar course,
going half way around her body and lodging near the spinal column.
It was feared she would die and an operation was decided
upon as the only means of saving her life. She is very low and few hopes are entertained of her
recovery. She is a sister of E E
Squire, mayor of Edon and chief clerk of the Edon store. Wisman was promptly arrested and
brought to Bryan for safekeeping.
Edon, June 15 – Word comes to us from the attending
physician, Dr Hathaway, that the victim is getting along nicely and if no
serious complications set in that she will be all right in a short time.

Inmate of County Jail Attempted Suicide Sunday
John Wisman, who attempted to kill his wife at Edon, a few
weeks ago, and who is now confined in the county jail, attempted to commit
suicide last Sunday, he was immediately put under the care of a physician who
worked diligently with him for several hours and at last reports he is
improving slowly from the affects of the poison.
It was thought that Wisman had been handed the poison
through one of the outside windows – but that theory was soon found to be
without foundation; but instead it is said he took a portion of the contents of
a small spraying apparatus used inside the jail for the purpose of
disinfecting, as well as to kill lice, bed bugs, etc
