Divorce Action in Williams County, Ohio - Caywood, 1873-1875

Alpheus James Caywood v Lemira Jones Caywood (Journal 8 p163 - 4 Nov 1873; Roll 25 case number 65 - Nov 1875)

The couple was married on 14 Nov 1869 in South Camden, Hillsdale Co, MI (Book E p59).  The bride was named Myra Jones.  Alpheus, b 4 Aug 1850 at Richland Twp, Steuben Co, IN, was the son of James T. and Elizabeth Van Sickles Caywood. Lemira, b 1845, was a native of NY; according to the 1860 NW Twp federal census PO Nettle Lake, p3, Hiram Jones 26 PA had an Almira Jones 25 NY living with him, along with Charles 7 PA, Hannah E 6 MI, and George 3 PA.  Whether this was the future Mrs. Caywood has not yet been determined.  

 

Alpheus charged that on 28 Oct 1870 at Frank Anderson's home in Bloomfield, LaGrange Co, IN, Lemira committed adultery with Alonzo Melman and she left Alpheus to cohabit with Alonzo.  Alpheus 19 OH day laborer was enumerated with his parents in the 1870 NW Twp federal census, p24 on 13 July 1870.  In the 1874 Wms Co OH Atlas AJ Caywood owned land in Sec 22 of NW Twp.  Alpheus apparently remarried as he appeared in the 1880 Adams, Seneca Co, OH federal census p57 as Alpheus 29 IN, Margaret 28 OH, and Jennie 7 OH.  Sarah L. Caywood, b31 Aug 1882 NW Twp, Wms Co (Birth V2 p43) was the daughter of Margaret Wallace and Alpheus Caywood.  The couple married in Hancock Co, OH on 4 May 1872.  Margaret was the daughter of James and Sarah Leonard Wallace; she was born on 17 October 1851 and died in Hancock Co, OH on 7 October 1891.  On 14 September 1892 in Marshall, IN Alpheus married Ellen Matilda Johnson (July 1872 – 1 August 1914).

 

In the 1900 Jackson, Kosciusko Co, IN federal census p5B, Alpheus Caywood was enumerated with Ellen and two older children, James T 19 and Lillie 17 whose birthdate matches that of the aforementioned Sarah L. Caywood. The family lived in the same location in 1910 with Alpheus listed as married twice before. Alpheus died on 7 April 1920 in Warsaw, Kosciusko Co, IN.
