Jacob Henry, Jr., v Christina Brookhouse Henry (Journal 7 - June 1868; Newspaper Notice, June 1868) – see Samuel Henry
By Pamela Pattison Lash (updated 9 December 2023)
The couple was married on 13 Nov 1859 in Richland Co, OH. Jacob, born 3 Aug 1818 in New Rumley, Harrison Co, OH, was the son of Jacob and Susannah Gotshall Henry. Christina, parentage unknown, was born in Lancaster Co, PA on 7 July 1838. The couple was enumerated in the 1860 Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census as Jacob Henry 41 OH weaver, Christena 21 PA, and Edward Brookhouse 14 PA. It is likely that this Edward is Christina’s brother. On 11 Dec 1863 Christina gave birth to a son, Edward Arthur Henry, in Superior Twp. Perhaps he was named after the Edward Brookhouse of the 1860 census.
The couple may have two other children, William and Mary Henry, according to several online sources, but I have not found anything to substantiate this. What Jacob failed to divulge was that Christina had given birth to a son, John Warren Tingley, on 15 February 1868. On 4 May 1868 Jacob in his divorce notice claimed that Christina, then a resident of Union Co, IL, had committed adultery with neighbor Allen Tingley, a resident of Superior Twp, Wms Co, OH. Again what he failed to mention was that Christina and Allen plus their baby had fled to Union Co, IL and had married sometime in 1868, whether before or after the decree for divorce was granted to Jacob.
Allen Tingley was born in Superior Twp, Williams Co, OH on 3 March 1844. He was a son of Allen Tingley, SR, and wife Hannah Mattox. Allen, a native son, was indeed a neighbor to the Henry family according to the 1860 federal census.
Jacob Henry married Sarah Bachman on 1 January 1874 in Williams Co, OH. Sarah (October 1832 NY - 28 December 1906, Florence Two, Williams Co, OH) had been previously married to Jacob Hicker and had a 13 year old daughter living with Jacob Henry and her in 1880. Interestingly, in the 1880 Madison Twp, Williams Co, OH Federal Census son Edward Henry lived with the Allen Tingley family. His mother was not living there as Christina had died c1875 in Tennessee. Jacob Henry died on 18 October 1886 in Montpelier, OH and was buried there in Riverside Cemetery.
The Tingleys had the following children: John Warren, previously mentioned, Adam (28 September 1870 IL - 5 Oct 1871 IL), Melissa Jane (7 January 1872 IL - 20 April 1953 Battle Creek, MI), and Nancy M also known as Isabelle (22 March 1874 Philadelphia, Roane Co, TN - pos 8 December 1877). Possibly Christina died in Roane Co, TN where he last child was born.
On 4 April 1878 in Johnson Co, IL Allen married Rebecca Ann Whitlock (30 September 1854 Roane Co, TN - 14 June 1922 Eaton, MI). Perhaps he met her in Roane County when he and Christina lived there. Allen and Rebecca had a number of children who were mentioned in the obituary of their father who passed away on 7 January 1923 in Eaton, MI. He was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery of that community.
