Samuel Henry v Emma Barber Henry (Journal 7 p77 - 5 Nov 1867; Roll 19 case number 17 - Nov 1867) – see Jacob Henry, Jr.
By Pamela Pattison Lash (updated 11 January 2012)
The couple was married on 29 Dec 1863 in Richland Co, OH. Samuel was born in Jan 1830, OH, the son of Jacob and Susannah Gotshall Henry. The Henry family was enumerated in the 1850 Jackson, Richland Co, OH federal census as Jacob 66 PA, Susannah 65 PA, Jacob 33 OH, Eve 24 OH, Mary 22 OH, Daniel 22 OH, and Samuel 21 OH. They were again located in the 1860 Jackson, Richland Co, OH federal census as Jacob Henry 75 PA, Susannah 74 PA, Eve 35 OH, Daniel 31 OH, Samuel 29 OH, and Mary Coonkle 5 OH. Emma Catherine Barber, born on 10 June 1845 PA, was the daughter of Michael and Mary Ann Garrett Barber, natives of PA.
Emma and Samuel Henry had no children. Samuel filed for divorce from Emma charging that at their home on 20 Jan 1866 she committed adultery with neighbor Franklin Duvall and on 23 Feb 1866 and on 1 June 1866 at the home of Charles Duvall in Superior Twp she committed adultery with Franklin. He produced the following witnesses to confirm his charges: David and Sarah Staufer, Charles Duvall, Minerva Smith, Phebe E. Linge, Sarah A. Linge, Martha Ott, and Unith Schaull. The defendant, Emma, wanted alimony of $56, which she received; the divorce was granted. Emma C. Barber was enumerated with her parents in the 1870 Jackson, Richland Co, OH federal census, but was not with them in the 1880 federal census; Emma, 33 PA, is living next door with her husband Aaron Frank, 29 PA. In the 1900 Jackson, Richland Co, OH federal census p11, Emma C. Frank, widowed daughter 53 PA, lived with her widowed mother Mary A. Barber; however, according to the 1910 Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH federal census p11B, Emma C. Frank 63 PA was a divorcee, living with her sister Cora M. Connell and her family. From this information it is possible that she was divorced from second husband, Aaron Frank. Emma died on 12 Feb 1919 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH.
Samuel Henry later married Mrs. Rachel J. Erskine Wright, widow of Cyrus Wright, on 16 Oct 1873 in Wms Co (Marriage V4 p299). Rachel was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Merchant Erskine; she was born on 23 March 1834. Rachel married Cyrus Wright on 9 June 1855. In the 1870 Superior Twp federal census, p33-34, Rachel Wright was listed as head of house 36 OH, along with children Abigail 14, Almon 9, and Olive 5, plus Samuel Erskin 21, all born in Ohio. In the same township Samuel Henry was enumerated as 40 OH along with the family of John and Sarah Henry. In the 1880 Superior Twp federal census, p26, the family was listed as Samuel 50 OH, wife RJ 46 OH, and Alman Right 20 OH and Corintha Right 15 OH. Samuel died in 1906 and Rachel died on 26 Aug 1912; both were buried in Riverside Cemetery in Montpelier, OH.
