Samuel Hall v Sarah Ellen Olinger Hall (Journal 9 p 280 - 30 Nov 1877; Roll 29 case number 28 - Nov 1877)
By Pamela Pattison Lash (updated 2010)
The couple was married in Mark Twp, Defiance Co, OH, in Jan 1871. They had two children: Mandana May (b. autumn 1872 who died at two months of age), and William Monroe (b 7 Oct 1874), who lived with Samuel in Defiance. Samuel stated that on 1 Aug 1871 Sarah slept with a man unknown to Samuel, later known as Thomas Mykrantz; in early May 1876 she committed adultery with Charles Ferrell, a distant cousin of hers; they had been intimate for a number of years and were frequently together even though Charles was married. Sarah also committed adultery with Silas Logan at the home of David Rhodes in Mark Twp; on 6 Aug 1876 she committed adultery with Daniel Moore in Franklin Co, Nebraska. As of Aug 1876 they stopped living together. Sarah was in Hastings, Nebraska and Wisconsin, but she then lived in Steuben Co, IN. On 1 Sept 1876 she committed adultery with Silas Logan again at David Rhodes' home in Hicksville Twp.
He brought two witnesses to testify for him. Albertus Ohlinger, 18, of Mark Twp said during a "call of nature" he saw Sarah and Charles Ferrell outside the Hall home. Amy E. Doughton, 39, of Grove Twp, Paulding Co, OH, who knew Samuel since he was four years old, stated that Sarah told her the child, Mandana May, was not Samuel's, but belonged to a Mr. St Clair or a Burt Crouse. A legal notice appeared in the Bryan Press, 27 Sept 1877, p2. Samuel received a divorce and custody of their son.
Samuel Hall, born 2 Feb 1851 in Paulding Co, OH, was the son of William and Emily Douglas Hall. The Halls were enumerated in the 1860 Crane Twp, Paulding Co, OH federal census p141, as William Hall 63 NY, Emily 47 NY, Lydia 18 OH, Reuben 15 OH, and Samuel 8 OH. After his divorce he married Mary Barbara Harmon on 4 Apr 1878 in Butler, DeKalb Co, IN and the couple moved to Antelope, Franklin Co, NE as evidenced by the 1880 federal census there p607 for Samuel Hall 28 OH, Mary B 19 IN, son William M 5 OH, mother-in-law Nancy Harmon 52 OH, and cousin George Cowell 15 MI. By 1900 the couple lived in May, Kearney Co, NE; they did not have any children. From there they moved to Kingman, Kingman Co, KS and by 1920 resided in Lamar, Barton, MO where Mary Barbara, daughter of John C and Nancy Harmon, died in 1929. Samuel died there on 12 Nov 1937 at the age of 86Y.
Sarah E. Olinger, born 1855 in Ohio, was the daughter of William and Phebe Crawford Olinger. The family was enumerated in the 1860 Washington Twp, Defiance Co, OH federal census p409, as William Olinger 27 OH laborer, Phebe 26 PA, John 6 OH, Sarah 5 OH, Monroe 2 OH, and Perry 1 OH. In the 1870 Mark Twp, Defiance Co, OH federal census p127A the family was enumerated with Sarah E 15 OH. After the divorce the Olinger parents moved to Carroll, O’Brien Co, IA by 1880 as listed in the federal census there. William Olinger moved to Lake Eunice, MN c1890 and was found in the Minnesota Territorial and State Census of 1895, living with his son Albertas (Perry). In the 1900 Homestead, Otter Tail, MN federal census p2A, William, 68 OH, was listed as a widower. Nothing more is currently known of Sarah E. Olinger Hall; however she may have married William Frank Marlow on 20 Apr 1878 and lived in Lewis, Clay Co, IN. If this was the case, Sarah Elizabeth Olinger was born on 18 July 1854 in OH and died on 27 Jan 1939 at the age of 84Y.
